TRIP DETAILS + INFORMATION

We are off to Lexington, Kentucky to bowfish a trophy species that “the average joe” doesn’t normally target with a bow: paddlefish, or spoonbill, a fish that existed before the dinosaurs. Our guide will provide all that’s needed to harvest this once in a lifetime fish. Caption CT Meyer with The Obsession Outdoors has twelve years of experience bowfishing and will put us on some great fish. All you need to bring is a cooler for your harvest and drinks, snacks, waterproof boots, warm/waterproof clothing, and your Kentucky fishing license. Since we will be hitting the water in early May, keep in mind that the temperatures will be on the cooler side.

Plan to arrive in Lexington on Friday afternoon. That evening, we will settle in, get to know each other, and have dinner before heading out on our first night on the water. Since we’ll be up all night chasing fish, plan to sleep in on Saturday. Don’t forget: Kentucky is known for horses and great bourbon. We’ll have the option to grab a drink, a bite to eat at a local restaurant, and explore the town before going out on our second night of bowfishing. Depending on flights, we may be able to enjoy breakfast together before making our way to the airport on Sunday.

The cost of this trip will cover two nights of bowfishing, two nights stay in an Airbnb, all equipment needed to bowfish, and a generous tip to our guide who will also clean our harvest for us. At our Airbnb, it is likely you will have to share a room or bed with others on this trip. Please be prepared for that!

LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: A Kentucky fishing license is needed for this trip. A 7-day Nonresident Fishing License costs $35. You can buy it online here or at a local Walmart.

TRIP ACCOMMODATIONS + MISC. DETAILS

Our place — comfy, cozy Five Squared — is tucked in a quiet neighborhood near downtown's restaurants, bars and arts; Rupp Arena and its UK basketball games and concerts; the hip Distillery District's restaurants; and Meadowthorpe's antique shops. For business travelers, it's also convenient to New Circle Road and local industry. Our place is great for couples, solo travelers, families with kids, and anyone who likes organic cotton sheets, exposed brick and the gentle rumble of passing trains.

Built in the 1960s, Five Squared is a two-story townhouse that was updated in late 2016 after being completely refurbished top to bottom in 2005. All furniture, furnishings and linens are new, as are most of the appliances. The home features charming exposed brick walls in the kitchen, living room and both bedrooms. The floors upstairs are original hardwood that was refinished in late 2016. The living room and master bedroom are quite spacious. There is lots of storage space, if you need it.

AIRPORTS + TRAVEL INFORMATION

The nearest airport is the Bluegrass Airport (LEX), which is about six miles from our Airbnb for the weekend. The second nearest airport is the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG), which is about 80 miles from the Airbnb. We recommend waiting to book your flights to be in sync with the other women attending to make traveling from the airport to the Airbnb easier. Randi, this trip’s coordinator, has graciously offered to pick up trip attendees if everyone flies into the same airport. With some logistical coordination, she is able to pick up attendees from either airport. Tentatively plan to arrive sometime in the afternoon (12 - 4 P.M.) on Friday, May 6 and depart in the afternoon (12 - 4 P.M.) on Sunday, May 8.
