Our guide will graciously provide all the equipment needed for this trip, all you have to do is bring your favorite snacks and drinks and an get yourself an Oklahoma fishing license. 6 ladies will be riding along with our guides for 2 half days of trolling and snagging trophy paddlefish!
LODGING ACCOMMODATIONS + MISC.
We will be spending our evenings in a secluded waterfront airbnb on Lake Hudson! This 3bedroom, 2 bathroom home will be perfect and comfortable for our weekend on the water. When we have some downtime during the weekend this space offers plenty for us to stay busy enjoying the outdoors or spending time in the hot tub on the porch overlooking the lake or starting a little friendly competition in the game room!
A little more information on our lodging directly from the listing:
This lakeside property is less than a 10 minute drive from Salina, Ok and located next to Hunters Cove on beautiful Lake Hudson. Amazing lake views from the hot tub or the terraced patio, the house is located far enough away from neighbors to enjoy a nice quiet private stay.
There is an amazing game room with arcade video games and pool table, along with extra sleeping space. The sun room is great for enjoying family and friends, playing board games or singing karaoke - all with lake views with windows that let the breeze in or closed to hold in the warmth. The main bedroom has a king bed, and the main bathroom includes a washer/dryer for any laundry needs. The second bedroom has a queen bed and private bathroom. The living room is open to the dining and kitchen, and there are plenty of places to sit and visit, watch the ball game, or to stream a movie. The kitchen has the basics along with plenty of dishes, silverware, and cooking ware for any meal prep or culinary delights. The microwave is extra strong, and there is a toaster, coffee maker, and numerous other kitchen delights. On the terraced patio is an amazing built in charcoal grill. This grill will cook for fairly large numbers of people, but it is also nice to use for smaller settings. In addition, there is a separate charcoal grill and a smoker should guests wish to use. From the house there is a walkway that leads to the boathouse. Living on a beautiful lake and enjoying lakeside fun also means accepting the dangers that being near water present (and a release waiver is used for guests to acknowledge that separately via DocuSign). That said, the boathouse features a ladder for swimming, and there is a table and chairs for having coffee in the morning or enjoying lunch right on the water. Guests who bring their boats can launch them from our on-property boat ramp, and are welcome to tie up their boats in our empty slip at the boat house. The lake wildlife is great to watch. There are four tables and chairs on the patio and being able to watch ducks, geese, herons and other water fowl is often mesmerizing. Early morning or at dusk its not unusual to want the lake breaking with the jumping of fish. A fire pit adds to the charm, and can provide warmth as the sun is setting or just watching the multitude of stars come out at night. In addition to the wonderful lakeside activities, the property also has enough land and trees to feel secluded. It is a great place to have fun, but also a wonderful space to be at peace.
TARGET SPECIES, REGULATIONS AND PROCESSING OF TAXIDERMY OR MEAT HARVEST PLAN.
Here is a little information directly from our guides on how we will be targeting our fish!
How do I troll? – First off, if you don’t have extremely tough rod holders or a rod rack very reinforced to your boat, do not attempt to troll for spoonbill paddlefish. It will destroy your gear and your boat!!! I’m using a rod rack securely fastened to my boat with Monster Rod Holders. This setup has been rebuilt several times and I “think” it may be built strong enough to last a few seasons at this point.
We use 2-3 pounds of weight below a 10/0 barbless treble hook on 100 pound line. In Oklahoma, we are allowed one rod per person when fishing for spoonbill paddlefish. Troll snagging is more like hunting as you are trying to find the correct speed, line length let out, and weight to maximize your chances at snagging a giant spoonbill paddlefish. A starting point, depending on current flow and water depth, would be trolling at 4-5mph using a 3 pound weight.
What does it look like when we get a “bite”? – Violent…a 20-100 pound fish hit at 4-5mph using no stretch braided line with the drag set tight is violent!
How do I land a spoonbill paddlefish? – Gaffs are illegal and a the paddle shaped bill will destroy a landing net, so we use our hands to grab the tail or mouth to bring them in the boat. Just be careful not to damage the gills or they will bleed out and die.
How do I tag my Oklahoma spoonbill paddlefish? – We wrap duct tape around the bill several times and use a permanent marker to write the license number on the tape. Then fill out your paddlefish permit accordingly and submit online with the Oklahoma Wildlife Department within 24 hours. The duct tape from tagging must stay with the fish until at your residence.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
CAN I ATTEND A TRIP BY MYSELF?
Yes! Many of our members attend Her Wilderness event by themselves, and leave feeling like they have made new life long friends. This is a huge part of why we do what we do. We highly encourage you to step out of your comfort zone, come meet some new women who love the same things you do.
HOW DO I KNOW WHAT TO BRING ON A TRIP?
For each trip, we will create a private group with every member attending to use as the main form of communication. One week before the respective trip we will post in the individual trip’s Facebook group a “what to pack” list that will include information that we think will be helpful. Remember, this may not include everything you need for your specific style of hunting and fishing. It’s always a good idea to do your own research. We encourage you to reach out via email if you have any additional questions on what to bring. questions@herwilderness.co

Your deposit will not be refunded even if your spot is filled.
DO HER WILDERNESS TRIPS INCLUDE A TIP?
No. As of January 1st, 2022 we no longer include a tip to our guides on our trips. We don’t always know how each person is feeling towards their experience and we want everyone to be in control of what they tip. Please be prepared to bring additional funds to give your guides a tip!
