TRIP DETAILS + INFORMATION
ALASKA HERE WE COME! We are heading to southern Alaska for five days of hiking, fishing and adventure. Plan to fly into Anchorage, Alaska on Wednesday August 30th before 11am so we can head south for three days of fishing/exploring in the halibut capital of the world, Homer. Then, we will make our way to Kenai for a once-in-a-lifetime fishing trip on the Kenai River. This trip will include two full days of halibut fishing, one day of fishing on the Kenai River and four nights of lodging. This does not include the price of a rental vehicle or fuel which you will be required to spilt between the other women on this trip. If you have time to extend your trip, we highly recommend it!
Our guide, has ample experience guiding women specifically targeting halibut. All photos shown above are taken on his boat that we will be fishing on out of Ninilchik, Alaska for two days.
Silver salmon can reach weights up to 20 pounds, although they average 8-14 pounds. With the light tackle we use these fish are truly a riot! There are many productive ways of fishing for the silvers, and at times you may find us fishing plugs, bobbers, casting spinners or twitching hand tied bunny strip jigs.
ABOUT THE AREA
We will be driving from Anchorage to Homer for our first three days. The views along the Sterling Highway provide a teaser of the sights in store in the charming, colorful town that lies ahead, Homer. As the road makes a final turn east along the bluffs overlooking Kachemak Bay, Homer unfolds completely. It's a truly incredible panorama of mountains, white peaks, glaciers, and the famous Homer Spit, a long strip of land that stretches into a beautiful deep blue bay.
Downtown Homer is strung along Pioneer Avenue on a hill between high bluffs to the north and Kachemak Bay to the south. It's little wonder that many Alaskans choose to vacation in Homer: the scenery is inspiring and the climate exceptionally mild. This community of about 5,700 residents is protected from the severe northern cold by the Kenai Mountains to the north and east. As a visitor, this is a town that tempts you to stay for a while. Between the excellent museums, restaurants, art galleries, great scenery, and interesting side trips to the other side of Kachemak Bay, you could easily spend a week – or a lifetime – here.
After leaving Homer we will stay from one night in Kenai, Alaska. Kenai is the largest community on the Kenai Peninsula. The city sits on a low rise overlooking the mouth of the Kenai River. To the west, majestic views of the Alaska Range and three active volcanoes (Mount Spurr, Mount Iliamna, and Mount Redoubt) make for a dramatic picturesque backdrop.
The main reason most people come to Kenai is for the world-class salmon fishing in the lower Kenai River and at its mouth. King salmon, red salmon (also called sockeye salmon), silver salmon (coho), and pink salmon spawn up the river and are caught by anglers each summer. The Kenai River was responsible for producing the world-record-holding king salmon, which weighed in at more than 97 pounds. During our trip we will be chasing after silver salmon.
